Q: Right front/back lights don't work. Why?
The car is a 1996 Hyundai Elantra. The back right side taillight along with the front right side turning /parking light do not work, but when I apply the brakes they both light up. Also when I put on the turn signal the front one works. Why do they not work while driving? I bought new lights and put them in and its still the same Is there a wiring problem?
A: Couple of things come to mind. The first is a bit stupid but not unheard of if the stop tail bulb is twin filament.By that i mean is the bulb twin filament with offset pins,as fitting this wrong way round causes this.To be sure, just remove that bulb and see if the front one works ok.Next the side lamps are seperate fuses left and right,so check if one has blown.Next the earth wire at either front or rear needs cleaning,at the body end as its unlikely to be bulb end front and back. The only other thing is?has it got park lights which work of the indicator switch. If so disconnect the plug off the stalk switch and see if they work right then,Good luck
Q: Is this car worth the buy?
Car:1996 Hyundai Elantra GLS Sedan
Price: $1,450
Mileage: 146,147
Automatic
No dents or rust
A: If it is in really good condition, check the oil if it is clean I would get it, if it is low and black....nope, the engine could have been abused. You dont want a car with that mileage that uses oil.... that means the rest of the engine is worn badly as well.
Q: Used volkswagen jetta or Hyundai?
Please help!!
I have a choice between a 2000 Hyundai elantra with 71k miles or a 1996 Volkswagen jetta with 84k. Which one do you think is better??
A: Sounds like you have a budget of only about $3000 and under, so I'd go with the Elantra as its newer, gets better gas mileage and more reliable then a Volkswagen. You should also check into a Mazda Protege, you can probably find a 2000 model for around that price. I agree with the poster above, a Honda/Toyota would be preferred, but as we both know they command a premium on the used market. I don't consider a Civic with 160,000 miles to be any better then an Elantra/Jetta with 80,000 miles, but people are willing to pay the same amount for them.
Q: Why won't my car start after sitting in the garage for 4 months?
Financial restraints prevented me from making a few necessary repairs on my 1996 Hyundai Elantra GLS. So I've had to keep it it the garage for the past few months. Now, I know enough about cars to know that if you aren't going to drive them you should at least run them for a while (or so I've been told). Unfortunately, that slipped my mind and now when I try to start the car it makes a choking/cough sound and won't turn over. All of the lights and bells are dinging. I just can't get the engine to start. Any idea what could be wrong? And how can I fix it without spending more than I already have to?
Thank you.
A: if you say the engine isnt cranking at all then it is most likely the battery. get a battery charger, jump it from another car, or buy a new battery. if its cranking but just not starting, "coughing/choking", then you need to look into your gas. Honestly since the gas is only 4 months old, i dont see why it wouldnt start seeing as how ive seen people start cars on multiple-year old gas.
Q: Whats wrong with my car? Leaking antifreeze...?
I have had it pressure tested twice and both times it checked out. The mechanic said that maybe the water pump was leaking after running at operating temps, and that a new water pump is a SIX HOUR JOB! He recommended that I just add coolant as needed. Then It has started leaking a lot! I tried Prestone cooling system sealant and it worked great....for a few days. Now the engine will be good for a few days, start to overheat, and I will have to add coolant. No idea where it is going because the puddles in the parking lot are pretty small. it is a 1996 Hyundai Elantra with around 170,000 miles on it. We have put a fair amount of work into it recently, but without a definate answer I don't want to replace the pump and find out it was something else. (The original leak WAS around the water pump area) Any ideas??
A: Lets see, you had it pressure tested twice and they found no leaks but when you park it, you see coolant. I would ditch your idiot mechanic and find someone that is a little more reputable. If you see coolant on the ground, obviously there is a leak that will show up with a pressure test, try a national chain shop that employs ase master certified technicians and go from there.
Q: P0422 Troubleshooting with high idle can anyone help me?
i have a 1996 hyundai Elantra i'm getting the code p0422. It idles high about 1200-1800 rpms. Vehicle runns great doesn't loose power or hesitate when started. already replaced spark plugs and wires, MAF sensor, both o2 sensors, catalytic converter looks good, and also the vehicle overheats every once and awhile. The only thing i can think of is maybe the coolant sensor. that could cause the code and give off false reading and fouled the sparkplugs and wires which i replace and also cause it to run high rpms. Any Suggestions?
A: high idle usually means you have a vaccum leak, check for a cracked vaccum hose or bad grommet were the big vaccum hose goes to your brake booster. or since you said over heating check EGR hoses for a leak also
